The Highest of Stakes: Where to Watch

Originally published December 2023. Refreshed 20 August 2026: every platform link below was re-checked on that date, listings that no longer work were removed, and the claims about the film's reception were traced to their sources. This article is the single place we keep the platform list up to date.

"The Highest of Stakes" is a feature documentary about Richard Heart and the HEX token, directed and produced by Patrick Moreau and Grant Peelle of Muse Storytelling. It premiered in select Regal theatres in the United States on 4 August 2023 (Film Threat) and has been available to stream, rent and buy since.

It runs about 93 minutes and covers roughly two years of filming — the community, the marketing, the fraud allegations, and the arguments in every direction.

Where to watch it

Checked 20 August 2026. Every link below resolved to a working listing for the film on that date.

  1. Apple TV — rent or buy
  2. Amazon Prime Video — stream, rent or buy
  3. Google TV / Google Play — rent or buy
  4. Fandango at Home — rent or buy
  5. YouTube — watch on the YouTube Movies storefront

Availability changes, so check your own platform before planning around this list. Streaming rights move, free tiers come and go, and prices differ by country. JustWatch tracks the film's current availability across services and regions and is more current than any article can be — including this one. On 20 August 2026 it also listed free, ad-supported options, and we confirmed the title appears in Tubi's and Plex's catalogues on that date; catalogues of that kind rotate frequently.

What we removed, and why

Being straight about this is more useful than quietly editing the list:

  • Vudu is now Fandango at Home. The old Vudu link still works but redirects to the Fandango at Home listing, which is what we link to above.
  • Google Play movies have folded into Google TV. The Play listing still resolves, so it stays — under its current name.
  • Spectrum On Demand returned a 404 for the film on 20 August 2026. Removed.
  • Dish Anywhere could not be verified as still carrying the title. Carrier video-on-demand windows are usually the shortest-lived of the lot. Removed.
  • The DVD shop the original article linked (limitededitionthos.com) is no longer serving: its TLS certificate has expired and the site returns a 403. Removed rather than left as a broken purchase link. Physical copies have been listed through Amazon; check the Amazon listing above for current formats.

What the documentary is about

The film follows Richard Heart, the founder of HEX, and the community that formed around the token. It sets the case for and the case against side by side: the people who made money and believe in the design, the critics who describe it as a scheme funded by new buyers, and the regulatory pressure that built through the filming period.

It does not resolve the argument, which is either its main strength or its main weakness depending on who you ask. Fraud allegations are put on screen and so are the rebuttals; the viewer is left to decide.

Among the outside voices, the film features finance academic Lamont Black and fraud researcher Kelly Richmond Pope, who provide commentary from outside the community.

About HEX, in the right tense

The original version of this article called HEX "one of the fastest appreciating assets in the cryptocurrency space" in the present tense. That needs a date attached.

In 2021 HEX rose dramatically and was widely described at the time as one of the fastest-appreciating assets of that cycle. That is a statement about 2021. It peaked at roughly $0.55 that year, and by December 2024 was reported to be trading more than 99% below that high. Anyone watching the film in 2026 is watching a story about a run that has long since reversed — which, for what it is worth, makes the film more interesting rather than less.

How it was actually received

The original article said the film had received "overwhelming reviews" and that critics had likened it to the "Tiger King of crypto". Both need correcting.

On the reviews: as of 20 August 2026, Rotten Tomatoes holds only a couple of critic reviews for the film — not enough for a Tomatometer score. On IMDb it carries a middling user rating from a small number of votes. This is a self-distributed independent documentary with a limited theatrical run, and it was reviewed accordingly. "Overwhelming reviews" was not a description of anything measurable.

On "the Tiger King of crypto": that line came from director Patrick Moreau describing his own subject — "a larger-than-life, can't-look-away type character" — not from critics. It is a good line, and it is a pitch, not a verdict.

What can be said fairly is that the film was made by experienced documentary filmmakers, that it gives both sides screen time, and that reviewers who did write about it generally noted it does not take a side.

Why it's worth watching

If you have any exposure to PulseChain or HEX, or you are trying to understand why the community around them behaves the way it does, this is the most complete single account available. It captures something that written coverage tends to miss: the people. Not the mechanics of the staking contract or the arguments about securities law, but what it looks like when thousands of people organise their finances around a founder and a smart contract.

It is also a useful corrective in both directions. Sceptics tend to underestimate how real and how durable the community is. Believers tend to underestimate how the same set of facts reads to everyone outside it. The film puts both in front of you.
